April’s update postponed and some other issues

May 7th, 2009 by Eduardo Manchón

Unfortunately due to technical issues the April’s update of Panoramio photos in Google Earth has been postponed to the end of May. The last weekly update was on April 25th adding photos up to ID 20980000 to Google Earth. The difference between the weekly update and the monthly one is that new added photos are displayed only in very low zoom levels in the weekly update. You have to wait until the next monthly update to see photos in different zoom levels according to popularity.

We added a new question to the Help page called “Spam in comments“. The idea is to discourage campaigns of comments for the Panoramio contest. Sending hundreds of comments with links is simply spam. If you get spam I recommend you to add a comment to one photo of the spammer including a link to that question. Normally after receiving one or two comments the user doesn’t spam anymore. This solution is far from perfect, but in the near future we will add a way to report comments and block users that abuse comment. By the way, this new policy starts now, so it doesn’t apply for comments made before May 7th.

I also would like to clarify that the final winners of the contest are only the ones included after the announcement in the blog. The contest page might be technically available before the announcement, but we always need some extra time for technical tasks and verifications.

    Oh that’s good :)
As we can clearly see from the winning photos of this month’s competition, the comments spam lowers the quality of the top photos.
It is clear to anyone i’m sure that the honorable mentions, at least this time, are far better than the actual winners, which is quite lame.

It seems that Google has reduced the number of photos shown on the Maps; has there been a change in policy?

The ‘Own’ tab appears to have been removed from the Panoramio location map views too.

Hi, in my labels “Australia 2003″ and “Bali 2003″ I am missing a lot of Thumpnails. If I Click on the thumpnail I see the enlarged Photo. Can you look at this and repare it? Greetings from Holland, (bdeh) Berend

I think the contest is a bit unfare when my submissions do not even come up when I browse the catagory they are suposed to be in. Seems like a farse to me.

I also cannot believe that they let a picture of a poster win in November.

I would like to see a 360 Panorama catogory, after all it is a Panoramio contest.

Generally, Panoramio does work so weak last time, that I do not want even to try..
Eduardo, what is going on ?

Can The Team improve that ?

    Hi there,
I have noticed that some of the photos I have previously uploaded and been accepted onto the maps have disappeared. There are red X’s now in the thumbnail place and no larger version either. What’s going on folks?

Also, is this the only way we can pass feedback to the team there? I couldn’t find a ‘contact us’ or anything similiar to be able to communicate through.

Many thanks though as the whole concept is really great.

I am protesting the fact that you allow photos of grafitti to be published on Google Maps/ Panoramio. I find most grafitti to be trashy, but more importantly it is illegal in the City of Boston. You are encouraging this illegal activity by publishing photos of it.

Will you please consider discontinuing this practice?

What has been happening with Panoramio / Google Earth updates for June 2009? There seems to be no new information on recent developments in the technology, procedures, and policies of Panoramio.

For the last two or three weeks I have noticed a slowdown in access to Panoramio photos as well as speed of posting.

Thanks for any new information on what to expect from Panoramio this month.

Any news on this? As far as I can tell there haven’t been any updates to Google Earth since April. An update on what’s going on would be welcome.

I know that some of uploaded photos from google map are deleted itself after sometime. I am in favor of you to allow photos of grafitti to be published on Google Maps/ Panoramio Also, this the only way we can pass feedback to the team there.
