I saw Las Medulas on History channel last night and Archealogists had it all wrong. The water in the tunnels was not released all at once to create a pseudo explosion. It was released and directed to erode the formations and the water carried the material over sluice boxes with riffles to trap the gold. A similar site is in California as a State Park.
