New photos from Panoramio added to Google Earth
Yesterday around 200,000 new photos were added to Panoramio’s layer inside Google Earth. Now the number of photos from Panoramio in Google Earth is around 1,2 million. With some exceptions, photos up to ID 2,000,000 have been included. This means around 2/3 of all photos uploaded to Panoramio up to this ID have been sent to Google Earth (e.g. photo with URL: http://www.panoramio.com/photo/1892099 has ID: 1,892,099).
If your photo has a higher ID than 2,000,000 you need to wait some weeks until the next update, expected for middle July, that will be larger and I hope will help catch on the delay.
By the way, now the blue compasses that represent photos from Panoramio in Google Earth are substituted for little cameras that are more intuitive.

great. im just searching my own pix.
cheers laurenz
Hello! I have waited perhaps 2 months and until now im not seeing any of my photos uploaded to panoramio posted in the google earth!!
what is hapenning? Any help would be very appreciatted!
did you find them? me not …
Actually the blue compasses are substituted by small blue dots, that turn into small cameras if you zoom near enough. This seems a good idea, less clutter. Even so there are areas that are completely covered (for example try Kinderdijk in Holland, where I was looking yesterday, or any other well known monument in the world).
What I do not appreciate is the “fusion” of Panoramio layer with Wikipedia and other Geographic Web layers, they are now distinguished only by the color. I would prefer being able to turn them off individually.
Best regards from Italy
PS: I look forward to having a forum again where to discuss with the rest of the Panoramians!
finally, after waiting almost 2 months: 3 pictures in GE (out of 158 uploaded images). at least one step forward. btw, all of them have slightly higher IDs than 2,000,000 (the highest is 2,006,091). I have read with some satisfaction that the panoramio team plans to catch up with the backlog and hope that the promise will be kept this time: waiting 2 months or more in a web2.0 environment is really stretching the good will …
saw the blue dots too: they disappear at mid-level zoom and reappear than as little cameras when zooming even closer. in my view, they cause even more clutter than the blue compasses when zooming really close. agree also with the suggestion to keep the different layers apart.
I can only underline the multiple requests here in the blog comments to re-open the forum or to provide at least an explanation and an approximate frame of time for its availability. the options for communication in the panoramio community have been reduced considerably after the announcement of the take-over by google.
cheers from brussels, christian
My photos were not included in GE
The IDs are higher than 2,000,000….. my first has the ID 2285709…. when will they be included? I hope this will be done soon….
Well, what do you expect? It’s a free service and apart from that i guess the Panoramia crew is buried by one million photos in just three months.
I got more into GE with this update. I am surprised at how many of mine made it even though I have not uploaded all that many pictures into Panoramio. Thanks to the team for all your hard work.
I think the blue compass looked really more clear…..
Thanks for the update on the GE update, Eduardo. I suddenly went up from 2 to at least 61 in Google Earth so that makes me happy. I do wonder about the popular tab: it does not seem to have been updated for a long time.
Like many others, I would certainly appreciate any information on when we can expect the forum back up and running. I realise you guys must be hard at work, but a quick message would be widely appreciated I think.
As for the new dots : I like the smaller dots, but I too would like to be able to switch off the different items in the Geographic layer. (Although that comment should probably be directed at Google.)
Regards from Ottawa, jhk
None of mine were included. Most were under 2,000,000, and uploaded shortly after the April update.
The photos were very good quality, and exactly what Google would be looking for (at least in my opinion). They are photos of local sites of high interest, in a bay area city in an area with almost no current photos uploaded.
No copyright notices or anything else in the photo that would cause an issue.
We expect in the next update to arrive up to ID 2,500,000 around July 20th. I believe in a couple of updates we will catch up with the backlog. We are working as fast as we can.
By the way, some people is confused because the ID number is not the same that the number of total photos. This is because usually 2 million IDs means around 1,6 million mapped photos. The other 0,4 million haven’t been mapped, that’s why we don’t count them. From those 1,6 million mapped photos, approx 1/4 are not about places, but photos of people, pets, etc. that’s why we don’t send them to Google Earth. That’s why the final number is around 1,2 million.
I also have good news, the forum will be back during the next week. We will create more topics and support for several languages. We know how much you missed it, sorry for the delay.
Regarding the new icons, I believe they have advantages and disadvantages, but I mainly agree with Claudio and LupusBXL. We will speak with the people from Google Earth in the next days and tell them what the users from Panoramio think about the new icons.
Edu
Ok, a few of my pictures are not about places, but non of the others like skylines, buildings, etc where included to GE (ID around 1.800000)
( How can I find out why … to improve?!
Hi Eduardo
It’s good to see the forum is coming back, it’s hard to have a community without communication…
Matthew
The news about the forum reopening next week are even better than those about the latest update!
So long!
Please bring back the compasses! There is not enough contrast with the background using the dots, and the cameras indeed clutter the ground view. Panoramio’s own KML still works though, but it doesn’t do compasses either bug instead big thumbnails. The only reason I can think of for not using the nice Panoramio logo is that they want to bring together images from many different services and show them all like the Panoramio ones are now, all of them looking alike on the map and only telling in the balloon where the image is from. Is the Panoramio “brand” going to disappear? Sometimes I would also like to browse Panoramio images only without the other Geographic Web placemarks, but it’s now impossible. Please please please let us have our compass!
When will we receive some news about the future plans after the acquisition?
Is there a chance, that Panoramio gets integrated with Picasa (the tool or the web albums)?
Dirk
Thanks Eduardo, that is a very nice update
If a picture with an ID under 2,000,000 (let’s say 1,975,000) has not already been uploaded to GE, it means that it will never be uploaded??
hey, just wanted to let the powers that be in this site that i am a Pingelly rezzie and i am sorry guys BUT you have incorrectly published a photo of our War Memorial!!! I dont know where this one actually belongs but it is DEFINITELY NOT!!!! in Pingelly. Please replace with ours, people would only be ill informed if they were to view it on this site then come see for themselves.
User PMK uploaded few days ago the photo 3.000.000!! http://www.panoramio.com/photo/300000
Hello! I like more compasses. Get back it in Google Earth, please!
Hello Eduardo
It’s good to read the forum is coming back. It’s hard to have a community without communication.
Congratulations on the number of images!
Matthew
Thanks, Eduardo, for the explanatory note! As you see, the Panoramio contributors are looking forward to get the forum back
… I hope that you may be able to solve the issue with geographic layers but recognise also that the may not be your call only …
Just saw that you and the team are working hard for the next update … have pictures of mine up to 2,288,223 nominated for the popular tab. Thanks & congratulatons for classifying 300,000 more! This encourages really to upload new images.
Btw: Enrique (post 19) posted a valid question: what about images with lower numbers? Though I recognise that some of my earlier images may not confirm with a very strict interpretation of the Panoramio rules (no people, cars etc), two rather popular ones were not nominated popular (2,002,967: a castle with 40 views and 2,112,611: a landscape with 42 views).
Cheers, Christian
Hey Eduardo,
I have also the same question, what about photos with lower ID Nr around 1,4 ml. for example? Won’t they ever be published in GE? I uploaded some really good underwater photos from a national park in Macedonia. (all of them ID-ed around 1,4 mil.) You can review them along with some others from me:
http://www.panoramio.com/photo/1463960
I think they deserve to be in GE
Cheers and regards from Macedonia
Ivo
it says on here my pictures are to small to put on google earth what does that mean its a normal size picture ?????????????????????
It’s great,I’v upload a picture half years ago.But i am still very happy when i saw it on google earth.
Dear Eduardo,
Congratulations with the growth of your project. It is a true gem on the internet.
What can we do to change Google’s opinion on the photo camera icons? The compass was a truly original icon of great clarity and simplicity. It’s a shame it is replaced.
Other than that, I am glad with all improvements.
The new symbols in GE are a great improvement. The camera icons may be a little too large though.
Eduard, I´m also wondering about all of the 20 of my photos in range 194177-194241 which are not included in the popular set. They should be there by now, unless I´ve misunderstood. So, should I delete and reupload them or should I wait a little more?
Another good work for the google earth / panoramio team !
Only two things…
1) why one of my recent pics ( ID 2057032 ) is updated on google earth while, if I understand, only the photos with ID lower then 2KK was updated ??? - this is the only recent ( ID higher then 2.000.000 ) pic of mine that I can see on google earth !! -
2) The little blue compass was really more beautiful that the new little blue ball … infact only by using the zoom we can see the new simbol ( the little camera )
Thanks to panoramio and google earth team for the new update
Great, I already found some really good photos from my home town in Google Earth (for example http://www.panoramio.com/photo/1060797) !!!
If any of your photos is under ID 2,000,000, but not included in Google Earth, please contact me at questions AT panoramio.com and I will see what happened. If we made a mistake we will add this photo to Google Earth in the next update.
Christian and Ivan now your photos are included in “popular” tab and will be included in the next update. Petteri, please, send me an e-mail with the exact IDs of your photos not included.
Fabrizio, some few photos are over ID 2,000,000 are included but are so few that I didn’t mention them.
Dirk and Para, I am sorry, but we can’t answer questions about future plans because we don’t know the future, still too early to say anything.
Eduardo
My photo still has not been posted on google earth what should i do?
This is not reply, but I have found no other place to post stuff. What has happened to the main and other pages of Panoramio? It seems like all the formatting, etc., has gone kaput. Hope y’all fix it promptly and easily!
The enormous number of published images causes whole areas to be covered by blue dots. This is realy realy annoying. Take i.e. Mount Rushmore. Earlier you could zoom in and actually see the presidents. Now the whole mountain is covered by theese dots. Google should definitely come up with a function that allows us to hide the dots.
Most of my Pics are no in Google Earth
Hi Geir, such a one-click function is already existing in Google Earth: you have switch on/off the Geography layer in Google Earth. You can do this in the layers window. Very easy and also very easy to reverse.
Best regards, Christian
Hi Eduardo: thanks for the prompt action! Very much appreciated here!
Best regards, Christian
@Eduardo: Thanks for the answer! I did not really expect anything, but was worth a try.; -)
I am very happy as a rooky user of panoramio, member since last may, that I have allready some of my photos on Google Earth, even he oldest one beeing ID 2034542.
Besides that happiness, panoramio is a great community, and it’s amazing to find some so similar photos, like we were side to side shooting them.
Keep up with the good work.
Best Regards,
AlexMatos
Hi all,
what is a minimum size for images to be published in GE? I am uploading my pictures in a 800×600 pixel resolution to spare your webspace
so are these pictures too small to be published? (could not find an answer to this in the FAQ section).
In Google Earth I like the small blue dots (symbols should be small and subtle) but i don’t like the little cameras. They are too large and too grey, cluttering the raster image. So, please keep the little balls but change back the cameras for the blue compasses.
And please, please re-seperate geography layers, so they can be switched off individually. Other projects might want to join those already represented. For instance, on Wikipedia we are working to integrate articles in non-english languages into GE. So, every user should be able to choose the layers he/she wants.
That much for today, thank you Eduardo & the team for providing such a fascinating project. Cheers from Berlin — Micha
Hi Eduardo
Some one has decided to dispute where l live and place my sunset in the middle of the ocean http://www.panoramio.com/photo/1578881 and now it has been removed from the popular set,
Moon shot http://www.panoramio.com/photo/1595617 has a suggested location in africa, only l know where l took the photo why would someone dispute it,
what can we do Eduardo
Yes, the camera icon is a nice idea, but in reality, the icon is too big and too dark.
Because of their colour, it’s difficult to spot them when they are alone, and because of their size, they create serious clutter when there are many of them.
Something smaller and brighter would be more optimal as an icon, I think.
Thanks for bringing this great web app to the world!
One thing I wonder: What exactly constitutes a “popular” photo, which will then be uploaded to Google Earth? In other words, what criteria must a photo meet before it is deemed “popular”? I have searched, browsed, perused, and looked, and can’t find an answer to this, other than a vague reference to “favourites”. It can’t be merely due to number of views, because I have seen photos not in the “popular” tab that have more views than some photos that are included. I have in fact seen a “popular” photo that was viewed only 15 times, and one of those views was me, I suppose. So then, does someone have to have a photo as his or her favorite to make it popular? Any answer would be appreciated. Thanks.
Is anyone ever going to explain why the Panoramio server has been going down for days at a time?

What does BACKLOG mean?
How panoramio will manage the (never ending?) avalange of photos in the future?
How panoramio will manage the (never ending?) avalange of photos in the future?
Sometimes I miss the date of capture inside the photo description.
It would be great to have a special tag field for inserting the date / month / year of capture with the possibility for searching special dates in panoramio/Google Earth.
OK - now I know what backlog means - sorry
Is it possible to know, with a “marker” or a “tip”, if a photo I’ve uploaded to Panoramio is also on Google earth?
Thanks…
Hello, I really enjoy the Panoramio concept but I’m a bit disappointed by the compression technique used on the picture files. When I compare the same photos uploaded in FlickR for example, the pictures appear really clean as if they were resized in Photoshop or some high quality editing program. In Panoramio it seems that there is too much “sharpening” effect, giving some image a not so flattering aspect. In particular I’ve noticed it on evening pictures which are usually a bit grainy.
I don’t know if Panoramio and Google may try to find a better balance between quality and image file size but when you look at the amazing rendering in FlickR, it should be great.
What’s wrong with my photos? Why have they never been posted or accepted by Googleearth? I would never think my photos are low quality.
Funny that you are complaining about your images do not show up. Two of my images do; but not by me and they are violation my copyright. Unfortunately here is nothing written what to do in this case. The Images are uploaded by http://www.panoramio.com/user/44766 - I wrote an E-Mail as well but did not get any response

Hmm…I found a photo in the popular set with only 6 views…I’m scratching my head here
Hi
Several of my older ones (which are on GE) are in 800×600. This is simply because I already had them processed at that size for other use. The photos in the normal view are reformatted to 500 pixels on the longest dimension by the Panoramio software on upload. I therefore now upload my photos at 1000 pixels on the longest dimension. This way there is little loss of quality in the resizing process and the full size view is large enough to be useful without being large enough to eat hard disk space on the servers and slow down the download too much for those who want to see the full size view.
Uploading at full camera resolution is a no-no for a couple of reasons. It takes up too much space on the servers, slows down the download and gives others access to a quality which I may chose to reserve for people willing to pay for my work.
Regards, Owen
PS. PLEASE bring back the forums soon!
I have not received notification of new comments for the last week or so and I suspect other user have the same problem. I have checked my settings. Great site. Gerry
Hello everyone,
I am new to photography and new to panoramio, but i have found it easy and fun. Photo’s seem to take several weeks before they appear on google earth. So i am being patient! I have seen some wonderful pictures from around the world and i am proud to add my photos, you can see them on panoramio by Paula K. Thanks to everyone who has made their photos public! It opens up the world!

I had the same thing happen to me. I have a pic of Miami beach in front of our hotel…http://www.panoramio.com/photo/1331018…someone repositioned it to a street. Maybe they were just playing with that option? Some actions which seem malicious aren’t really meant to be. I hope that others will help me in repositioning some photos I don’t have mapped. On some photos I forgot were I took the pic exactly. I’m not worried about being popular…I like the critiques and commonality I share with the community. I really hope the forums are going to be up soon..I miss the interaction and it was fun. Where the heck is Fairfield???

So what about it, Panoramio? There is no info on this OBVIOUS question on your site.
Please put this information in your “About” page. Take a clue from Google and make everything you do simple, straightforward, and easy.
Thank you.
Ther is a big number of Panoramio photos located at the North pole that have nothing to do with the pole. Why have they been included in Google Earth ? Just to praise vanity?
There’s also quite a few photos and other stuff at the Greenwich meridian on the equator. I think it’s where they end up when the person who uploads makes a mistake or leaves the position blank.
I understahd there is a big backlog on the uploading of pictures to Google Earth, but why can I not see my newly updated pictures on Panoramio’s map as advertised in the FAQ?
Thank you for replying.
Kind regards
Slinnodd
I have never received any answer about refusing my photos, from Panoramio. I find that is very funny sometimes. I just want to show everyone some historic sites in Fuzhou. Well, fine, if Panoramio does like them, I will give up. I am very disappointed about this. Sigh….
Eduardo, any news on the forum returning? The forum *if* properly run, can lighten your load I’m sure.
Hi everybody, Hi Eduardo & Joaquin!
Many if not all, of the above questions / comments / issues were discussed, and often answered, in the Forum. For example the sharpening, the stealing of images, the north pole, the never-ending story of the “misplaced” photos that go out of “popularity” and so on!
You announced that the forum was going to be reopened soon: where is the problem?
A community so big like the Panoramio’s one, often can solve and answer the problems “by itself”, using the experience and know-how of “older” users, without even the need for a direct contact to the administrators. And anyway, the forum was part of the fun: having the possibility to share with others the good and bad things of this wonderful idea that Panoramio is!
So, I say, please bring the forum back, in whatever form you want, maybe moderated if you wish so.
Ciao dall’Italia

Indeed, the forum is a vital part of every community! (It also helps to brush up my english.)
So long!

Jimmy, I’m not part of the Panoramio team, but I think I understand what they are looking for. I looked at your pictures on Windows Spaces. You’ve got many good photos there, but most of them reflect your interest in racing and motor sports. Many are pictures of racetracks, cars and drivers, and your medels. They don’t show much about the areas in which they were taken. Pictures like that are fine for sharing in Panoramio, but aren’t likely to get to GE, because they don’t really describe the places where you took them.
On the other hand, your pictures of Auckland, NZ, are the sort of photos that have a very good chance of getting to GE.
When I post pictures of flowers, pets, friends, or of my hobbies and special interests, I don’t expect them to get into GE, so I usually don’t map them. Lots of my pictures that I think should be in GE don’t get there, but that’s up to the Panoramio team, and while I would like to share them with all the world, sharing them in Panoramio is enough for me.
Eduardo,
I’m curious as to why since all my pictures are downloaded in JPG format that some are converted to BMP when I access them. Just wondering. I noticed that the BMP files are much larger than the JPGs.
Does the Download Google Earth link (Google Adsense program), that tell us to download Google Pack, works well? Im trying to find the Google Earth at Google Pack, but it doest come inside it anymore!!!
Well, ChipStephan, the photos I posted on GE are all about historic buildings in Fuzhou, China. There have not yet been anyone who has the same photos as mine. If you like, you could have a look at this http://www.panoramio.com/user/174368
Thank you, Jimmy5353, I hadn’t seen those. The photos are all excellent, and deserve to be on GE. But you’ve only posted five photos, and they don’t have any tags, You have only one conversation, so it’s unlikely that other people will see your photos unless they just stumble upon them. I recommend that you look at other people’s galleries, make comments on their pictures, and let them know that you are interested in their work. If you do that, they will start looking at yours, your view count will increase, and your pictures will be more likely to get into the popular set
Good luck, Jimmy5353. And post some more pictures, I like your Fuzhou and Auckland work.
I posted new photos of my swiss trip in MAY!!!! But still none on google earth!
I wanted to show them on GE but if is not able to see them.. then is useless to mark the photos!!
Anyway all phtos are landscape and they are the most accurate than many many users here on Panoramio!
Judging from many of the comments in the Blog it might be a good idea to add info on the ‘popular set’/GE in the HELP page. Information such as:
Who decides what photos make it to the popular set?
How many times does a photo have to be nominated?
Does the number of hits have an influence?
Does scarcity/ density of photos in an area have an influence?
What are the qualities that make a photo suitable?
Should overuse of filters, zoom and photo editing software be discouraged?
What photos are NOT suitable?
Advice on drawing viewers to your photos.
Bravo on a great website! And well done on keeping inappropriate material out (unlike other well known photo sharing websites).
regards Gerry [http://www.panoramio.com/user/49280](http://www.panoramio.com/user/49280)
I uploaded a photo over two months ago and it still isn’t showing up. The ID number is 1977441 so I’m guessing it should have been included in the latest upload? I understand it takes time to do all of the updating, but it seems a long time to wait to know if something is wrong with how I’m doing this.
Thanks!
ChipStephan - I was not aware that hit counts on photos related to the Popular tab? From what I read, the Popular tap is merely the subset of photos that Panoramio have sent to GoogleEarth, and has nothing to do with how many people have viewed your photos. I may be wrong, but they state in the FAQ/Help that:
“You can see at any time the current set of photos that will be sent to Google on the Popular tab of our map.”
That implies the Popular tab is not actually “popular” photos (as in view counts), but actually just the files that have been “approved” by the Panoramio team to send to GoogleEarth.
It will be interesting to see how the next update goes.
Hello,
i’ve got some questions concerning the content of the uploaded photos. Does Panoramio send photos with animals in zoos or animals shown in flightshows to GE? What’s about “things” shown in museums?
Best regards
Hi, I have a question… for example i have 160 photos in panoramio. Exist any form to confirm which photos of this 160 are in GE and which not? I would like to confirm if some of my photos are really in GE, Thank You
Hope soon update in GE
Geoff: Yes, you’re right, hit count may not have anything to do with what gets in the popular set. In fact, as Gerry points out, it would be helpful to know the criteria for a photo to get into it. My point to Jimmy was that to get into GE, your photo has to be in the popular set, and sharing it with others via comments and tags might help, but don’t guarantee it.
I’ve looked at the galleries of some of the people who’s Fuzhou photos are on GE, and they all look rather sparse. Few pictures, no favorites, few or no tags, few or no conversations, in all, very unlikely to attract any attention. I don’t know why that should be. And I don’t know why Jimmy5353’s photos are not on GE while the others are. I can understand his frustration.
Sergio 61898: Many of your photos are “popular” which means they are really to be uploaded to GE. In comment #12 above, Eduardo states that the next upload is scheduled for July 20, just 4 days away!
Mike G: I agree, it’s a long time to wait. This “backlog” they have makes it hard to tell if your photo has been rejected or if they simply haven’t gotten around to it yet. Your photo is marked as popular, so I’m guessing it should be included automatically on the 20th.
Diego: It would be nice, wouldn’t it? But no, the only thing you can see in panoramio is whether each photo is “popular” or not, and you can only see that for each photo separately. The only way to see if your photos are actually in GE is to look for each one in GE.
Geoff and ChipStephan: I agree, the hit count must not be that important. One of mine was included with only 7 hits. I think some of those galleries with no contacts and thousands of hits may be getting their popularity strictly from the location of their shots on the map. Their are many Asian users who fall into this category, so maybe they are using some other system to communicate with each other, though not with the rest of panoramio (you’d think panoramio would include it’s own name in their spellchecker). As far as Jimmy5353, I think the datestamps on his photos disqualified them.
My 2 cents: I think they should have, instead of just “popular” and “not popular”, at the very least an initial state like “not processed yet” which will be changed once they make a decision. That way, you’ll know if you should keep waiting or not. And it doesn’t seem like too much trouble to show that information from the thumbnail page for all photos at once in addition to the one-at-a-time approach they have now.
I ahve a problem with the new panoramio… though a great idea and a inovation few would of thought… BUT the people use it as a hi5 or a comercial use… it is wrong… i think that google earth is ment for people that like to see the wonders of the world and the panoramio to be used to show the landmarks in high resolution… it is not interesting to see persons faces and photoes without a name… or a comment… it is lame and not usefull… I THINK GOOGLE MUST BE CAREFULL NOT TO TRANSFORM THIS INTO A PHOTO WASTE… would be nice to be much more cultural and intelectual!
Las locaciones indican la región de Antofagasta, sin embargo, corresponde a fotografía de la región de Atacama. por favor modificarlas.
Gracias.
Congratulations!
One small suggestion: You can let the user choose if they would like to expose their own contact information to public or not. Currently you don’t have such function, when people for example click the people who uploaded the photos, all they can see is the album, not the user contact info and biography, which may be helpful for other people’s trip plans.
Chip - it could be that those people with photos in GE from that specific location, were amongst the first users on Panoramio, at a time where the volume of photos was so low it was much easier for the team to approve them. I guess when trying to approve 200,000 photos per month, they will always overlook some, and remember also, that may be a rather subjective decision.
Message for Jeremy Stone,
Please get your pictures of Rocky Point volcanic rocks out of Kino Bay. You have cluttered our area.
Thank you,
Norm
hello,
what i would wish me for panoramio is that photographers can send other photographers private messages without to have it always visible to all other users. special for example if u get a question about allow to let use your picture for other ppls website. or is there almost a way to answer such requestions without needing to make a comment to that picture again?
Hi Geoff,
You’re right the Popular tab is merely the subset of photos that Panoramio have sent (or will send) to Google Earth. It’s called “Popular” because that set is ordered by its popularity instead of its date.
Cheers,
I just uploaded my first 31 pictures to Panoramio, in hope to one day see them in Google Earth. I admit I’m very excited. I can only imagine having to deal with millions of photos coming in, yikes!
Good luck with that log.
PS: Expect a lot more photos from me!
I was trying to locate Noribetsu in Hokkaido, Japan on Google Earth. I just couldn’t find the place. Could someone put the spot there?
Thanks!
Greetings to you all. I’m starting to get scared with the millions of photos that are uploaded to Panoramio. It has been growing at a geometric rate. Some Google Earth areas are already flooded with (sometimes awfull quality and missplaced photos)
If the majority of photos that come into Panoramio continue to go to GE without a better filter, the panoramio layer in GE will soon be virtually useless.
I predict that sometime in the future (perhaps not far from now) Google Earth will have to make a 180 degree turn in all this. Refilter and dump the majority of the photos and upload only the ones that pass through a very strong filter process.
Its my conviction also that for a very known object like a building or historic structure for instance, there should only be a dozen (no more) very good and well placed (within meters) photos. When a better photo appears it should replace one (less rated) existing and not be added to the flood.
Regards
Did I bring a huge debate here? I am so sorry to Panoramio guys. But this just shows how Panoramio Staff deal with some people’s efforts.
Talking about the photo, no mater landscape or not, I think Panoramio does not care.
Let me show you this: http://www.panoramio.com/photo/1250024
Is this called landscape? Maybe?
What about this: http://www.panoramio.com/photo/1191019
I am very disappointed about my previous photos. I have already deleted them. I wish my new photos would be showed on GE. I still trust Panoramio. Shall I?
Maybe a system where there would be a few markers on the place of interest and clicking on those markers would open another link to a page with links to photos in them would be fine. Maybe marking off areas or regions and placing one link to those many photos for that region, with another link from each photo to individual maps would work. Just my $2 and 50 cents…

Love the site. I had been viewing photos while trip-planning, then decided to join.
I see some areas are very popular, I’m wondering why there is no limit to the number of photos at a given monument? I would suggest a user rating system to maintain the favorites, and maybe have a link for “more images”
Of course “where” is necessary for GE, but I think “when” is also very important. I’ve seen photos taken in the 1970s. What if, as an example, a user could select the 1970s as a filter and see the world as it was then.
Ok, rambling - I would also like to see more ways for users to interact with each other.
Regards
Jimmy, your previous photos probably were not included in the GE because of the visible url addresses. Good decision to delete them. As for your new ones, try to turn off date and time on your photo cammera. People interested in it (if there are such) could allways find it in the exif data.
I could not see anything wrong with the photo 1250024, the other one is allready deleted.
Regards
I think there a lot to consider in Vasco’s last post. I’m as guilty as anyone of “flooding” with all the pictures of Yosemite that I have posted. But Panoramio, even though it’s tag line is “Photos of the World” has always allowed portraits of people and pets, cars, and other personal photos of no interest to GE. In that sense, Panoramio is a photo sharing service like the countless others on the internet.
There are hundreds of thousands of photos being posted, and I don’t envy the Panoramio team who are trying to decide which ones belong in the popular tab.
If they should decide to limit submissions only to those photos that illustrate a location, or that provide interesting sights for those users of GE who are only looking information about a location, that would be fine with me. But filtering wouldn’t be easy. The task would be monumental and probably would require a large paid staff and a lot of time. And there would have to be some way for a submitter to dispute a rejection - requiring more staff and time.
I see no solution other than trusting the submitters’ own judgement, and continuing to provide a means for people to challenge inappropriate or misplaced photos.
I hope when the forum comes back that it allows us to submit profiles, and send and receive personal messages and e-mail while keeping e-mail addresses confidential if that’s the person’s wish. Even PHPbb provides some spam filtering through various ban controls on it administration pages. Allowing personal messages on the restored forum would reduce the number of comments - some people have hundreds of pages. Just restoring the forum would help that way, too.
Any news on the forum yet?
I must emphasise that I am not against uploading millions of pictures to Panoramio, I already uploaded lots of photos, some of wich I don’t even map because there’s no evident location . But I think that GE has got to have other purpose, and should be a lot more carefull. Better to have many but good photos than totally flooded with medium overall quality.
For now the problem is not so evident because there are only a few photos on GE compared to the size of our planet. But in about 5 years from now? If this geometrical growing rate continues…
Ahh, since there is no Forum, this is the best place to post this:
Thank-you Panoramio team for the new information line being provided on the photos that not only gives the photo ID for easy reference, but ALSO indicates whether or not the photo has been selected for upload to GE !!!
The one down side: now if the Forum is (ever) re-opened, there will only be half as many posts!!!!
(OK, maybe not)
My only wish list item now: is there any way to return the ‘Photo Extra Information’ ? That was so helpful, and it gave info on my own photos I have no idea how to find out otherwise!
Thanks!
I respectfully disagree with Vasco’s position. Judging photography - beyond technical aspects such as pixel depth, resolution, etc. - is a highly subjective matter. What constitutes a “good” photo is a matter of debate.
Furthermore, and especially now that Panoramio is a Google subsidiary, it would violate one of Google’s stated philosophies that they will not make a change if it doesn’t offer a benefit to their users. There are a lot of photo sharing sites to choose from. Panoramio’s biggest edge is that your photos may be included with Google Earth. Take that possibility away - focus it on an elite few - and there’s no reason to post anything here.
Hi Mary Ke.
I don’t know the place called “Noribetsu”, but there is “Noboribetsu” in Hokkaido, Japan.
Isn’t it in “Noboribetsu” that you look for?
Hello! I have a qestion. I’ve uploaded some photos with black frame (for example http://www.panoramio.com/photo/2761068 or http://www.panoramio.com/photo/2761105 ). They are not in the “popular”. So this frame could be the reason why they aren’t there? I couldn’t find an answer in the FAQ.
I’m a newcomer to Panoramio, having discovered it when pictures first started appearing on Google Earth but only just having gotten round to uploading anything, so I apologise if I’m covering an idea that has been discussed before, but would it be worth adding a special tag that acted as a declaration of “this photograph is illustrative of its location”? Assuming that the majority of users wouldn’t abuse the tag, that would at least eliminate the personal pictures from the list sent to Google Earth.
The only reason I’m uploading pictures at all is to illustrate locations that have few or no existing pictures or to provide a ground view of what is otherwise a puzzling object on the aerial picture. It’s mildly irritating to think that illustrative pictures are overlooked because Panoramio’s staff are slogging through 4000 pictures of cats, as if someone else has embarked on a project to photograph and map every cat in their county.
My vote doesn’t count, but if I had one I’d like to see only geographical images being uploaded to GE. When I’m planning a trip, or just exploring the map I want to see photos of the places themselves, not a random family standing in front of a tree that might be near the area in question. Like someone has already mentioned, there are a ton of photo sharing sites that allow users to upload their family photos. GE is a map tool, therefore I’d like to see images relating to the places, not the people that have been to the places. I don’t mean to offend anyone by stating my opinion. If I have, I apologize.
I don’t know the place called “Noribetsu”, but there is “Noboribetsu” in Hokkaido, Japan.
Isn’t it in “Noboribetsu” that you look for?
I agree with you, Mike G, as to uploading to GE. It’s the Panoramio team who decide what gets uploaded to GE, and they’ve been pretty good about keeping out random families standing in front of trees. But they can’t catch every one of them.
SantoB, I also vote on an update on the “what is the status on the Forum” issue. Eduardo mentioned couple of weeks ago that it would be back “next week” back then but the Panoramio team must be using an alien time table for weeks
.
The Blog is just updated way to slowly to be of real use to the community.
As for the good old discussion on “what Pictures should be popular and or on GE and which not” (old discussion for those of us which had been in the forum when it was still active):
There are many users out there with as many different opinions on that issue. What is garbage for one is treasure for someone else.
A bit of info for those that are relatively new to Panoramio:
-Earlier this Year Panoramio did not filter any pictures when uploaded and any picture that was uploaded landed on the Popular list right away if mapped (btw there was no other list, the “All” and “Your Photos” Tab did not exist).
Individual users had the ability to “vote” off pictures as “not descriptive”.
Over time this resulted in some users crying foul because their pics where removed and others saying the system doesn’t work because too many in their opinion “non descriptive” pics stayed on the popular tab.
After a few forth and back battles the Panormio team decided that each and every one picture gets “reviewed” if it can go on the Popular tab. IMHO this system still lets through too many duds but then again the filter system is very arbitrary in nature.
Now as for pictures on GE: The system was and maybe still is that Panoramio submits pictures that are on the popular tab to GE, then GE filters those pictures again for content (not working too well either IMHO) before placing them on GE. Most likely this is still being done in this way.
In regards to a question that Mary Ke had some time ago (that’s why I hade the Blog), check your spelling, it should be written “Noboribetsu” not “Noribetsu”. So type “Noboribetsu Japan” into the GE search box and it will bring you there
I agree guys. I don’t like the use of filters to enhance shots either and I especially hate to see those fake photoshop images. Panoramio is a medium for sharing the sights, culture and moods of that tiny spot in the world where we live or have visited. But it’s up to the us the users - ’show it as it is folks’. Gerry ps Bravo Padraig Harrington the ‘Open’ Champion.
@Mary Ke:
I’m not perfectly sure but it’s highly probable you’re in search of Noboribetsu (hot springs, crater lake, bear park… does it sound?) - Some info may be found here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noboribetsu
The placemark would have to be in
42°26′59.00″N
141°10′12.00″E
Good luck!
I have a suggestion.
What I noticed is when your photo is accepted and added to Google Earth the number of views for that photo quickly starts going up. It would be nice if Panoramio could provide some feedback to Panoramio users on which photo is receiving more clicks and total number of views for all photos of the specific user.
It would be nice to see such statistics as
Views last day, Views last week, Views last month for each photo. “Hot” photo status would also be nice feedback (based for example on the number of photo views per week with respect to total number of views per user over the same period).
Hi, i’m worry about Photos in Bogotá City, Colombia. Photos in GE over Bogotá is in different locations (more than 10 kms), or has bad names. There is so many photos in this situation (near to 80%), so is difficuilt to suggest all of them. Also there is many photos in correct locations that isn’t upload to GE. However Bogotá hasn’t few photos in comparation other cities of the world. Colombian People hope new uploads and corrections about photos actually in GE, than you
I know it’s nice to see your pictures on GE, but the Pano community has gone since the removal of the forums, so I am not uploading any more pics.
Has anyone else stopped uploading since the forum went?
I just uploaded my first pictures to Panoramio,
in hope to one day see them in Google Earth.
but after one month I think that uploadeds won’t come in never Google Earth
Mick: Absence of the forum hasn’t slowed me down. I’m still posting. There is a user-run forum available. Make “Forum” one of your favorites and take a look. It’s not like the old forum, but it works.
Giovanni: The last upload was June 27. Uploads are usually done once per month, usuallym but not always, around the middle of the month. Sometimes it just takes longer for the team to go through the thousands of postings. And when they do and submit their list to GE, there’s no guarantee that GE will accept all of them.
Has anyone else noticed that the forum is back up? Good work crew.

Yes, jimwitkowski, right after I posted that last message.
