The ridge of the mountains, called the Nyergestető is a special place for every Székely, since this area witnessed of many battle - against the Tartars in 1550, and the Turks in 1660. On August 1, 1849, on this narrow ridge, colonel Sándor Gál, and his 200-men-strong tiny Székely troops, tried to stop the huge army of Russian tsar. In the short but heroic battle, which was one of the last battles of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, all Székelys fell. There is a mass grave in the forest, which gives resting place the 200 Székelys fallen in August 1849.

„1849. augusztusában a Kászont Alcsíktól elválasztó Nyergestetőn Tuzson János őrnagy vezénylete alatt mintegy 200 honvéd több napig feltartóztatta a Lüders orosz és Eduard Calm-Callas osztrák tábornok a Kászoni-medence felől Alcsíkba betörni készülő seregét. A túlerő elől visszavonuló székely alakulat maradékai Gál Sándor ezredes seregéhez csatlakoztak Tusnádnál, majd a Török Birodalomba távoztak. A Nyergestető – a székely Thermopülé – a székelyek hősies ellenállásának helyeként rögzült a regionális emlékezetben.

Hi Daryl! This is a cemetery. 200 soldiers died in the Hungarian revolution in 1849th August 1. Verge of the forest was buried in a mass grave victims of the battle. The visitors erected many wooden headboards. The wooden headboard is a Hungarian symbol - a decorative memorial column. Greetings, Joli
