Flooding near the railway station @ Whitby 5th Dec 13

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

This series of images records the recent floods in my home town and they will remain here for a while, but since they are of limited interest to most viewers and rather mediocre in quality, it is my intention to remove them sooner or later. If you have an opinion regarding this, please feel free to express it since I might be persuaded to keep one or two!--------------------

Normally, this open area is thronging with people, day and night.. Since this flat expanse of water is such a rare event, the town looks strangely surreal ;)--------------------------

Immediately to the right of this shot, within a hundred metres, is the harbour, but there are no defining edges to indicate its boundaries. The boats are floating higher than the shops. Shortly after this photo was taken, the town was plunged into darkness due to water in the main supply.---------------

The "yacht sails", adjacent to Trenchers now "wet" fish n' chip shop, is in-fact a piece of "public art" in the form of a stainless steel sculpture in the shape of "Yacht Sails". This nautically themed centre feature sits on top of the submerged mini round-about.---------------------

The red stripe through the shot is evidence of a passing emergency services lorry with its tail lights on! and the shimmering red light (a most attractive phenomena) was caused by the vehicles wheels as they splashed through the water.------------------

It now transpires that this flood has caused millions of £££££ worth of damage locally and many of these homes and businesses will be affected for many months to come. Fortunately, no lives were lost.

My sincere apologies to you all for taking so long to respond. My visits to Panoramio are few and far between these days and until I get my cataracts fixed it will remain so unfortunately (thank goodness for the spell checker and zoom facility)

Neil Grimwood~~~~Good to see you Neil ;) I think we got away with it pretty lightly compared with those unfortunate people in the south of the UK. If those storms had come from the North East, I reckon Whitby's ancient and eroding sea defences would have gone and most of the old town would have gone with it! I've decided to leave this image on!

Conquilha~~~Thank you so much for your seasonal greeting and nice compliment.

◅✞▻Richard◅✞▻~~~~Fortunately, the next spring tide caused only minor flooding. Many of those unfortunate to be flooded in December without insurance are still struggling to return home. Hope all is well with you and yours ;)

digitaaal~~~~Your'e most welcome PIsta ;) It's a pleasure to see you here.

Gabor Retei~~~~Warm greetings Gabe ;)~~~Many thanks for your special wishes!

Tjeert.Mensinga ©~~~~~A warm welcome Tjeert ;) I'm most grateful for your friendly greetings and kind appraisal ;)

Mark Kreuz~~~~Hello Mark, I'm grateful for your visit and complimentary remark ;)

Edward Galagan~~~~~~Many thanks Edward, good to see you here ;)

MirceaRAICU~~~~Hiya _Mircea :) Special thanks for the YsL award and nice comment!

((Ospr3y))~~~It's always a pleasure to receive a visit from you Liam, your approval is much appreciated ;)

Алексей Резнёв~~~~Hello and welcome, thanks for stopping by!

Steve Paxton~~~~~They tell me it's burning hot down there Steve. I think that we got your share of the wet stuff ;)

Ivan Logvinov~~~~Many thanks for your generous appraisal Ivan, glad you liked it ;)

varkos~~~~Hello Nick :) Your visit and kind review is much appreciated!

Biplab Kumar Pal~~~~I enjoy taking night shots Biplab, my biggest concern is getting the exposure settings right and hoping for a lucky shot..Luckily the camera took care of the rest. I had no idea what the image contained until I saw it later on my monitor. The result surprised me. Many thanks for your generous appraisal, especially for the L+F ;)

Fardin فـــــــردین 17~~~I greet you warmly and thank you kindly for your nice compliment and L+F ;)

I'm thankful for all your amazing comments guys, it is a pleasure to receive so much positive feedback and favourable reviews..Once again, I'm sorry for taking so long to respond and I hope to repay your visits in the fullness of time.

Kind regards!
