St. Mark's Church-in-the-Bowery - 10th Street and Second Avenue, NYC - 2008 . . . . Built at the end of the 18th Century on the land where Peter Stuyvesant's private chapel stood, this is the second oldest church building in NYC.

Built at the end of the 18th Century on the land where Peter Stuyvesant's private chapel stood, this is the second oldest church building in NYC. Stuyvesant, the Dutch Director-General of New Amsterdam who surrendered the city soon to be known as New York to the British in 1664, is entombed here.

This was also the site of a famous 19th Century corpse-napping, when the body of millionaire merchant A.T. Stewart was stolen and held for ransom. He was eventually recovered and reburied elsewhere.
