Baby tree - Near Rantepao, Island of Sulawesi, Indonesia

In Tana Toraja ( central Sulawesi) when a baby dies, they carve a hole in a tree and place the baby inside. The idea behind this is that for the local people a baby is innocent and in this way their spirit can grow with the tree. I think it's a beautiful idea. There can be many babies in one tree. In the photo you can see the holes covered up until the tree grows over the holes.

En esta foto se aprecian mucho mejor las tumbas de los bebés que en la anterior, además me gusta la composición que hace que a la vez que se ven los detalles de los huecos con sus puertecillas, destaque la majestuosidad del árbol :))

Ver tus fotos es en ocasiones casi como estar ahí. Me ha conmovido la explicación de este arbol-tumba, pues siempre he pensado que si pudiese elegir mi lugar de enterramiento sería bajo un árbol (en otro lugar te explicaría mis razones...) pero lo que más me ha impactado ha sido ver la cantidad de "ventanas" que hay en ese árbol, sin incluir aquellas que se pueden intuir más allá de la foto... Si como ellos piensan sus almas crecen con el árbol serán ahora un "gran" espíritu que seguro guían a su pueblo.

Gracias por compartirlo, seguiré buscando entre tus fotos para saber más de esta-hasta ahora para mi-desconocida pero interesantísima cultura.

Gracias por tu precioso comentario Crystal. Si te fijas bien, hay algunas ventanas que ya han sido retiradas del arbol a medida que han ido cicatrizando el corte. Este arbol tiene segun nos contaron al menos 30 almas. Encantado de compartirlo. Saludos witxe:)
