Mt Kinabalu Mesilau Valley -Sabah Nov 2013-15

Nepenthes rajah lower pitcher. A symbiotic relationship has been recently described between this species and Mountain Tree Shrew and Summit Rat. This Nepenthes species provides nectar on the underside of its lid for the two species, who in tern drop excrement into the pitcher as they eat. Note the vertical orientation of the lid, open for of the peristome, and perfect positioning & proportion of the pitcher opening, to act as a latrine, as the mammals feed and face the lid. A similar symbiotic relationship has been discovered with Nepenthes lowii, presenting the classic hour-glass pitcher shape and widely open pitcher entrance and lid.
