This carriage trail was created to haul building materials for the construction of Governor MacCorkle's mansion, Sunrise, in the South Hills neighborhood of Charleston at the beginning of the 20th Century. Today it is maintained by the city and leads to one of the best views of downtown Charleston.

You can access the trail at the bottom by parking next to the CSX ramp...the parking area is between the ramp and Bridge Rd. From the mansion: From the circular roadway there is a garden and some sculptures to the right, toward Bridge Rd. In that garden, but near the mansion, is a timber staircase that leads to the trail. That is the shortest route to the horseshoe bend I photographed.
I'm almost certain the trail begins on the other side of the mansion...the west side. There is what appears to be a service road of asphalt that winds around the northern side of the mansion, then farther to the eastern side and the stairs mentioned above. Hope this helps! But if you do take photos here don't post them to panoramio...you'll surely put mine to shame! Just email them or something.
I'm only kidding of course, and can't wait to see what you capture. Later, BH

LOL! Thank you. Unfortunately, I won't be in state again until December, and it won't be worth photographing (unless it snows while I'm there). I'm moving back in April, so I'll have to check it out then.
