TVA Fontana Dam, NC (June 2006) -- My 3 favorite TVA dams are - in order - Norris, Hiwassee, and this one. Like Ky Dam, it was completed in 1944. It's 480 feet high and nearly 2400 feet across. The scenic, tree-covered Smokies provide a beautiful context for this massive concrete and steel piece of modern engineering.

Excellent perspective of this mighty dam. This is by far the best photo of Fontana Dam I have seen in Google Earth.
