I can imagine that the forest was once so thick that it would be difficult to walk through it...

The forest has been affected both by cutting and climate change - it overlooks the north end of the great Sahara desert and the hot siroccos blow up from the south. There are many young trees growing here though, and we can hope they will survive as long as their parents did - 5 or 6 centuries...
