The past gazes upon the present... what is old? what is new? Where will the future lead?

Congratulation, Chris! You walk around with open eyes. I guess it's colonial style. What a contrast and what coincidence, the "nudes" look as if they are going to be hanged with the cable below their necks.
An amazing photo, which tells quite a story! I wonder, what traditional people, men and women think about the sculptures. Obviously it's accepted or else the sculptures would have been removed.
So many hits and no comment. Most people don't even see them, even when they look at photos.
Warm regards, May

Hi May, I hadn't focused on the cable before - but it truly is a good metaphore - it is loosely hung, but strong. The city and the country are under restraint and the potential for conflict still simmers - yet life goes on and most people just wish for normal life, welcome visitors and love their country.... French, Berber, Arab - diverse with a long history -- at least 30-40,000 years.
The hits (for all the pictures of Algeria) are mostly through GoogleEarth I believe, as opposed to Panoramio, and I have received thanks for posting them. Comments are very rare. The two most popular are this and this and I have no idea what the draw is...

Interesting contrast. Two look upwards, one - downwards. It is very sharp sight at a sharp corner of a building. Friendly greeting from Ukraine, Larissa

Thanks for your appreciation of the subject Maarten. It was a chance shot and I am pleased that the image provides for some reflection. here is my favorite from this trip. This was a work trip studying the climate history of the region and the ecology of the cedar forests. I feel lucky to have visited twice, but now it is even more difficult than it was then. As foreign scientists we had a contingent of soldiers and police with us every day and trying to work in the forest under those circumstances was not what I am used to.
Cheers and best wishes for the future for all of us. Chris

Thanks for your nice comments Valentine and Brezza, it is interesting architecture from a bygone era - just 100 years ago, but a world away now... Perhaps it will be popular again someday.
