Some of the crypts were designed as temporary holding places for bodies of people that died in capital of Washington destined to be sent to their home areas for permanent burial. Some have family names. Some seem to have multiple families buried. The inscriptions sometimes record the result of epidemics that swept the city. Few now realize that once yellow fever swept these areas. The Foggy Bottom area, now associated with the Department of State, was named because of its low lying, swampy surroundings and fogs--and mosquitoes bringing epidemic.
