This is an approximately 250 degree view from Humpback Rocks on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The left end of the image is looking south along the Parkway toward Torrey Mountain as you move across the image you are looking west across the Shenandoah Valley to the Alleghenies then north along the Blue Ridge and Shenandoah National Park and finally east toward the Piedmont and the mountains of Nelson County.

Excellent panorama Bruce, and lots of great detail! From this jutting prow of rock you have captured a rolling sea of mountains stretching into the distance.

Thanks Brandon! We had a great day to go up here and the visibility was pretty good! We were not able to pin point where we lived from here but I know it is down there somewhere! Bruce

The full size resolution isn't the best, but I think I can make out the field in front of my house in it. I bet in the original image that went into the panorama you could pick my house out, and possibly yours as well. Yours might be blocked out by Signal Hill though, I can't really tell at this resolution. Some time I will try to upload a pic of the valley that has my house and certain other landmarks circled and pointed out.

Thanks Brandon. Next time I am up there I will have to take a couple shots of the Piedmont to the east using the zoom adjustment and then I think if I enlarge it on the computer I may be able to see what is what. If I do this I will post it and you can give me an idea if my identifications are right! I still need to get up there to see the dawn sometime, but I think I will wait til the fall when dawn comes later in the morning!

Thanks Tom. this took a composite of about 6 exposures and can be a little deceiving because in actuality you don't see this entire view all at one time ( unless of course one has eyes in back of the head like my mother had!!). Thanks again. Bruce

Very impressing photo, Bruce! Mountains, hills and wood as far as one can see! I love this feeling of being the first human being discovering this place. In my country you'd always see some houses or a hut and you'd hear some noise from the valleys of a train or from above some plane. :)

Thanks May! This actually is not quite as wild as it may seem as a good portion of this landscape has homes and small farms scattered about and hidden by trees however it is nice that much of the signs of human activity is hidden here. It does seem to be far enough away from major roadways so as to have some level of quiet which is nice! Thanks for the comment. Bruce

Great panorama Bruce! I enjoy these images a great deal. I love the detail and the way a person can make a landscape look more interesting just by making a panoramic image out of a scene. I have a few on my page as well, please have a look.

Thanks for the comment Daniel. The view from Humpback Rocks where this was taken, is a beautiful one as you can see! If you are ever in Virginia you should check it out! I will check out your panoramas as soon as I get the chance. I too enjoy seeing this style of photo. Thanks again. Bruce

Hi Bruce

A very beautiful place and great panorama view.

Now I understand John Denver:

Almost heaven, West Virginia,

Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River.

Life is old there, older than the trees,

Younger than the mountains, growin' like a breeze.

Country Roads, take me home,

To the place I belong:

West Virginia, mountain momma,

Take me home, country roads.

(Sorry, I couldn't resist it).

Greetings from Denmark. Finn.

Yank in Dixie, on June 12, 2008, said:

That's quite alright Finn.. I like the song too! I will merely add that in the song, John Denver refers to the Blue Ridge and the Shenandoah as in West Virginia when these places are actually in Virginia. Still a wonderful song! Thanks for the visit and comment. Bruce
