Why was this not selected for G-E? And could you please add some more information about the monument.

Whilst I have the utmost respect for Madiba, I wonder how many 'shrines' there will be to IRA and 9-11 bombers .........

On the 5th of August 1962 Mandela was arrested at a point on the main R103 near Lions River and was imprisoned in the Johannesburg Fort. He had been on the run from the Security Police for seventeen months. The monument has been erected at this spot, the place where he said goodbye to freedom for 27 years.

On the plaque it reads:

"Tsiamelo - This monument was erected by the people of Howick to commemorate the site of arrest of President Nelson R. Mandela on 5 August 1962. The plaque was unveiled by the President of the republic of South Africa on occasion of receiving honorary citizenship on 12 December 1996"

Hi, it's a pleasure. I also resubmitted it for G-E, and looks like it got accepted this time.

If the world to themselves could have selected her father, she would have chosen Nelson Mandela.
