The Town Hall

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

Architecturally, the City Hall is one of the most valuable buildings in Nis.

It is located near the quay by the Nisava, in 7 Jula Street, where the Prince’s Castle,

the summer residence of the prince-king Milan Obrenovic, used to lie. While the local branch

of the National Bank was being made, this previous building was pulled down, to be replaced with a new one.

The foundations for the new building were officially laid on 28 July 1924, commemorating the 10th

anniversary of the beginning of World War One, which had started on that very date, when the Yugoslav

Government had received a telegram from the Austro-Hungarian Government. The foundation stone was laid by

the Central Bank Governor from Belgrade, Georg Weifert.

The National Bank Building, now the City Hall, was built in neoclassicist style, with decorative ornaments

in artificial stone, and with a specifically ornamented entrance. Herbal ornaments, tympanums,

window frames and series of columns are characteristic. In terms of architecture, this is one of the most

beautiful public buildings in Serbia.

Filijala Narodne banke-stari Niš

Zgrada Kabineta spada u red arhitektonski najvrednijih građevina u Nišu.

Stil: Neoklasicizam
