Chasing Moonbeams

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

Sadly there was too little water in Cook's Meadow for a shot like this in 2014. Hopefully we'll have a stronger Winter next year. This image was captured in May 2008.

  • Great shot Jeff, a nocturne very well done.
  • Next time try to make a shot with a very long time exposure, looking toward north (at least 30 minutes) and see the result...

Thanks everyone! This was under a full moon with a 5 minute exposure at f/4, ISO 400 with a Cokin 120 4X graduated neutral density filter cutting down the direct image of the falls to bring it close to the exposure of the reflection (your eye compensates too as you look around, so the photo looks more natural that way). I didn't stick around for longer star trail shots because I'm impatient and wanted to get to the base of the falls for the moonbow pictures (my XTi produces a ton of noise on longer night shots anyway). Thanks again!

Hello JeffSullivan! That is a wonderful photo! The reflection of the mountain in the water as well as the clear starlit sky impress me much. That is a favorite. Many greetings, contest

Thank you for your kind feedback!

I will be leading a field workshop here next May to catch dogwood trees with their white flowers, waterfalls with high Spring flows, and full moon and night shots, including night rainbows created by the light of the full moon. Of course we will visit all of the usual Yosemite landscape viewpoints, including some that very few people know of.
