Winsor White, on May 23, 2008, said:
William Henry Dickens, an original St. Vrain Valley pioneer, was highly successful in farming and numerous business ventures, and by 1898 was the biggest taxpayer in Boulder County. He was murdered in his home by an unknown assailant in 1915, a sensational, widely covered news story.
Dickens built the Opera House in 1881, with the theater on the second floor and the first floor housing his bank. The Opera House was the most widely used community center in Longmont for many years. Social and cultural life revolved around it, including dances, concerts, vaudeville and minstrel shows, plays, and sporting events such as boxing and wrestling.
The Dickens Opera House is one of the few theaters from this period left in Colorado. It has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places since July 28, 1987.
