Consecrated during the last decade of the fifth century BC, the Temple of Saturn is the oldest shrine in Rome after the Temple of Vesta and Jupiter. Headquarters of the state treasury, the temple contained a statue of Saturn that was filled with oil and wrapped in bandages of wool. During the Saturnalia, the festivities which were held December 17 to 23, the bandages were removed, he kept a public banquet, gambling was permitted, according to tradition, the festivities were concluded with the cry of "Io Saturnalia". During the seven-day celebration, the most famous of Rome, the social order based on masters and slaves was subverted and the hosts were put to the service of their slaves at meal times.


Consacrato durante l'ultimo decennio del V secolo a.C., il Tempio di Saturno è il più antico luogo sacro di Roma dopo il Tempio di Vesta e quello di Giove. Sede del tesoro di stato, il tempio conteneva una statua di Saturno che veniva riempita di olio e avvolta in bende di lana. Durante i Saturnalia, le festività che si tenevano dal 17 al 23 dicembre, le bende venivano tolte, si teneva un banchetto pubblico, il gioco d'azzardo era ammesso; secondo la tradizione, le festività si concludevano al grido di "Io Saturnalia". Durante i sette giorni di festeggiamenti, i più famosi di Roma, l'ordine sociale basato su padroni e schiavi veniva sovvertito e i padroni si mettevano servizio dei loro schiavi al momento dei pasti.
