This view shows the Italian entrance to the 11.6 km Mt Blanc tunnel, first opened to traffic in 1965. It was the site on March 24, 1999, of a major fire which caused the deaths of 39 people; After a three-year reconstruction and the addition of numerous modern installations, rigorous safety rules are enforced in the tunnel: lights 200 meters apart define inter-vehicle distance, and automatic radars throughout the tunnel enforce a reduced speed limit.
