Aetoloakarnania, The lagoon of Aetolikon near Kefalovrysso

Αetolikon, the aquatic town called Little Venice of Greece, is a municipal section of Messolonghi municipality with a population of 5,349 inhabitants, ten kilometers northwest of Messolongi. The city of Aetoliko is developed on a small island rooted in water in the middle of the lagoon Aetoliko-Messolongi. It is connected from the east and west to the mainland by two stone arched bridges original length of about 300 meters each.

One of the most famous fishing regions of Europe, the lagoon of Aetoliko-Messolongi is a largest ecosystem with many specimen of fishes and birds. The shallow waters are assisting the development of rich flora and marine macrophytes, which are food for tens of thousands of ducks, divers, egrets, cormorants, gulls, while regular is the presence of raptors, such as Scissor-bird and Imperial Eagle (Aquila heliaca). Aetolikon and Messolongi are famous for the Fish Roe of mullet, as the adjacent lagoon is ideal for aquaculture.
