Beautiful shot. Looks like California's Devil's Postpile laid on its side. Do you know the history of this?

Most of the basalt formations in the Rhön are just like the Devil's Postpile, they're vertical. This one looks like somebody stacked it up like that, but it is natural. According to the sign there, it's very unusual for these formations to lay like this. These rocks are smaller than the ones I remember at Devil's Postpile though.

Thanks for the info rhönweed. I live in Fresno and spend a lot of time in Yosemite and Sequoia and Kings Canyon, a little less on the east side of the Sierras. Hope to get to that side more this year.

I grew up in Antioch(East Bay Area), but my grandparents lived in Sonora, so I spent a lot of time in the Sierras. I loved hiking on the east side of the Sierras, a huge contrast to the west side! More rocks, fewer trees, and great views across the desert if the weather's right.
