The Externsteine "stones of the Egge mountains" in the Teutoberger Wald (forest) are formed from the lower Cretaceous Osning sandstone deposited 120 million years ago along the shoreline of a large ocean. The horizontal sediments were folded during an orogenic event about 70 million years ago (Tertiary) which tilted the rocks so that they are now vertical. Erosion of softer sedimentary rocks has left the present day bizarre sandstone structure.
