This image, taken facing north, is of the breakwater at Rouse Head, North Fremantle. It was constructed during the late 20th century to protect a substantial ocean-infill project on the eastern side.
On 28 May 2008 news broke of a business consortium's proposal to further dredge the seabed to build a series of islands on the western side of the breakwater to accommodate luxury dwellings and a canal marina sufficient for 20,000 people. The proposal met with immediate hostility from local politicians and environmentalists.
