A flight takes off to the west from runway 27 of Bristol International Airport. The airport was developed in the 1950s from a standard design WWII fighter airfield.

And I remember that it got ILS only in 2001, which made it sometimes a big event when landing with less than approx. 100m visibility. It was like.... first you see nothing, of course...landing gear out...see still nothing...flaps at full suspension...see nothing...you think that now is time to land....see nothing....aah there's the fence...landed...done ...thank you.

I'm glad you didn't tell me this until now. I've been flying in and out of Bristol since 1987. If I'd known then about the lack of ILS maybe I would have used Heathrow instead! Best wishes, purdey

Hi Purdey, I didn't want to frighten but I frequently landed in Bristol and really had such experiences. Especially when flying with an AVRO/BAE (high wing airplane) you could see the flaps at its maximum degree and then you knew that it only took a minute or two until landing even without sight. HJ

...but pilots are less sensitive than passengers.

Hi purdey, nice shot. I like the blue colors of plane and tank. Nice airport shot.

Thanks Thomas. It was a quick shot while I was standing in line to get on my plane. Best wishes, purdey
