Built between 118 and 126 AD, the Pantheon has a concrete dome, 43.2 meters (142 feet) in diameter. The oculus (opening at the top) is 8.7 meters (29 feet)across, which gives an idea of the scale of the building. The dome was the world's largest for over 1300 years, until the construction of Brunelleschi's dome in Florence's cathedral (built 1420-36).
I used a Nikon DSLR with its kit 18-70mm lens. Took several shots and assembled them. There is no way this image can be made with just one shot, even with a fisheye: the fisheye would create distortions very different from that visible in this shot. I have posted a full spherical image of the interior of the Pantheon here, in case you're interested. As for cxsnow's comment above, "Piazza della Rotunda" ... it's not. The piazza is the square in front of the building. Rotunda is another name of the building more properly called the Pantheon in English ( or il Panteone in Italian).
Hi Robert, great picture and thanks for sharing your secret. Did you special software or just regular Photoshop? How did you manage to even out the difference is lighting?
