MONTREAL - A violent thunderstorm roared across the Montreal region and the South Shore this afternoon, downing power lines, toppling trees and causing several trucks to overturn on the Champlain Bridge.

Gusting winds and heavy rain knocked out power to 63,000 Hydro-Québec customers on the island of Montreal and delayed flights from Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport.

The sudden storm, which saw winds reach up to 110 km/hour on the South Shore, darkened city skies and had Montrealers running for cover.

Hail the size of golf balls fell on the South Shore near Beloeil, he said.
