hi moritz. good shot. it's a similar view from a palestine suburban, or like brazilian fabelas, or another kind of poor village. it's incredible that the same landscape is similar all around the world. My regards for you form Urugya. CU

Hello Moritz and NicoLi, Dari-Ekhi does not look that bad, it's not mile after mile of shanties. I think the people here have enough space to keep some cattle. So to see, some are still living in their traditional felt tents.
Specially for NicoLi: the road will be asphalted ten years from now.
Greetings, Claus

Hi Claus,
actually, a large part of Dari-Ekhi (the one I stayed for some weeks) looked quite like that. This is the part pretty close to the city, as you can see on the map. Further down the road there are more houses, but I still feel this to be quite typical.
Apart from that, Dari-Ekhi is certainly not a slum, or actually downright poor. Most of the people I met live in their tents voluntarily.
Regards, Mo

Oh, and to add on that, maybe have a look at this picture: http://www.panoramio.com/photo/1732458 It provides a pretty good overview over Dari-Ekhi (or an adjacent Horoo), and what it looks like there.

Hello Moritz, I followed your advice and had a glance at the picture that you recommended. Checking the map of Ulanbatar, it appears to me that the city is enclosed by quarters like this. Looks as if the civil authorities are planning and building the infrastructure, and sell or lease the plots. The plots are rather spacious, and the houses well-built. Certainly, these areas are no slums or even poor neighbourhoods.
Regards, Claus
