Thanks, marbiz ! How we loved telling people this is where we kept our boat when we were kids! The funny thing is, while I sure agree about the Welsh name ( I suppose its those Y's and W's that are vowels that throw us Yanks off completely) as I joked above, if this name is just broken down into syllables, its 'easy' to pronounce! Ethel Merman and Ray Bolger even sang a song about it, called "The Lake Song"in some old movie apparently:

I'll close my eyes and picture you in front of a "Glenn Miller" style orchestra singing the "Webster Lake" song. Mmmmmmmm! Sounds grand! Now who can I imagine singing Ray Bolger's part? Mmmmmm I think I'll leave it for some-one-in-.... to jump in with a smart remark!

LOLOL, marbiz, well the era was certainly not long ago enough to have actually seen that movie!!! ha-ha - it was just on the town website link, and interesting to find out that a real movie with the Scarecrow included the name of the lake. (and also ha-ha, no I didn't see Ray Bolger as the Scarecrow in a movie theater, though my mother did. I just still do my best to catch that performance every year when it's on TV.)

Thanks akervan - and you've made the correct assumption on the name. There are a lot of stories about what the name means, but in general it seems it means something like 'fishing place at the boundary waters'. The strange thing about that is that it is in fact at the current boundary between Massachusetts and Connecticut.
