I've added a note on "hyperfocal" photography to my blog describing how to maximize depth of field and get sharpness from near to far objects in your landscape photos: http://www.activesole.blogspot.com/
I've recently been paying more attention to hyperfocal distance in my own shots, and in my opinion it makes a difference.
