This shot is looking due east at sunset. The amazing color is the result of the sun reflecting down the huge thunderhead(the top of which was probably at about 40,000feet) which had just blown through. Don't remember ever seeing the effect this dramatic. The look of HDR is a result of using the ADL or "Active D-lighting" on the D300(this is one image). I like to call it "Active Dynamic Range".
Hi Tom, that was my first reaction, 'nice HDR'. Fabulous shot either way :-)
A touch of 'Alien Invasion - Independence Day' perhaps.
Have a great weekend Tom,
Cheers Sean. It was a little eerie seeing the setting sun reflected in the east. The west was totally obscured. I actually did a little "tweeking" in Nikon Capture NX on the raw file. You have a great weekend as well. :)
Best regards, Tom
Fantastic shot :-) beautiful colours and special moment :-) Best regards Eva
Interesting meteorological effect, Tom - makes for a fascinating image - but one that passes the test os still working as an image without the explanation! Nice work. Graham

Amazing..quite an effect created by "mother nature" and you. Very dramatic and wonderful finish. Well done! (Julie)
Hi Tom. Very interesting meteorological freak and beautiful shot.
