Looks the same as circa 1980 when Michael Palin visited in his "Confessions of a Train-Spotter".

I seem to remember him going home with the station name sign in that particular program. I doubt if its changed a huge amount although the area at the old slip-way has seen changes since the bridge was opened. This photo was taken in 2002

Yes, he purchased the station sign from that station.

I found a photo that might even be from the 1980's. At least the trains have the correct logo on them. On Panoramio I saw a photo of a high speed train in Virgin colors. Times change. Anyway, that photo:

You're quite right about that other photo, it is from the 1980's. And to prove it here's a web site that has all the details about that particular old Class 37 loco that shows it was there in 1986. Which just proves yet again anything you every wanted to know can be found on Google.

I haven't seen a Virgin HST but I know they run the Pendelino (tilting train) into Glasgow, which if you know your UK railway history is pretty much what the APT designed by British Rail did 30 years ago but now resides at the Railway Museum at York.

Amazing the things that are out on the Internet.

My guess is that the photo was taken around 1990#

the reason is that you see in the back of the photo the mine hunter class navy ship which was produced first in the late 1989 as the sandown class >> and yes Iam sure because I served on one of those ships for non forgettable 14 years

The ship in question is M112, HMS Shoreham, which entered service in Nov. 2001, the last of the Sandown class to be built, the photo was taken in September 2002.
