Tide's out in Whitby Harbour

The rise and fall of the tidal range varies between 4.3 metres (neap tides) to a harbour brimming 6.8 metres (spring tides). The old anchor on the pier in the centre of the photo was caught in the nets of a local trawler. It is of historic interest and represents the era of sailing ships. The sandy beach to the left of the photo was commonly used to beach the flat bottomed "barks" for the purpose of careening and mending the wooden hulls!
