21st february is observed as shahid dibash (martyr day)in Bangladesh. On this day in 1952 some brave people of Bangladesh(the then East pakistan) embraced martyrdom to force the pakistani govenment to declare bengali as state language.Shahid minar (martyr monument)was built to remember their sacrifices.Hundreds of thousands of bangladeshi attend the shahid minar bare-footed every year at midnight, the first hour of the day,to pay their homage and place floral wreathe.21st february is also declared as international mother language day by UNESCO.
