The old Iron Bridge that stood here until last summer was an unpleasant, steep and nasty to cross structure. After some delay we now have a fine, handsome pedestrian bridge in its' place, thanks in no small part to the auspices of British Waterways and the Regional Development Fund. Woodbeast has an excellent photo of the bridge in his gallery.
This excellent facility has drawn attention to the town, and rightly so - however I was amused to note a recent complaint in the press from a senior community member who thought that the waterside area had been spoiled by the small yellow advertising pennants hung by the council from the lighting columns along Silver Street (just visible behind the sign on the right of the picture - you may need to view full size...). I tend to think that the lack of weeding and the general poor maintenance of the paved area are far worse... couldn't we afford a little TLC?
