Henry Thorold, in his excellent gazetteer of Staffordshire villages 'Staffordshire a Shell Guide' (ISBN 0-571-10516-5) described Hoar Cross Church as '...solemn and severe...' yet he thought it was a remarkable church, 'Bodley's masterpiece' as both he and John Betjeman referred to it (George Frederick Bodley was the architect). It is certainly an imposing edifice, but I would consider it beautiful rather than severe. Find out more about the church and it's tragic origins here.
