Nice Picture, brought a smile to my face. Its called Cow Carnie though. Apparently a cow fell in and was sucked under by one of the under water currents. As kids we used to jump off the sides into the river plus muck about in some of the caves that are off this picture to the front an right.

Thank you and thanks for correcting the map. It's really called Cow Carnie? I actually went to Kirkby Stephen specifically to see the "Devil's Mustard Mill" which all my Eden Valley literature talked about. And it looked just like the photos I saw. I've been duped by the TIC!

I envy your childhood! What a great place to grow up in!

Great Photo. As kids fifty odd years ago we always knew it as 'Cow Carnie Hole'. I assume that 'Devil's Mustard Mill' is the spot we called 'Devil Grindie Mustard. It is about 50 yards from where you took your photo downstream and a wee bit to the east. A small stream vanishes underground and produces a low rumbling sound. One of the large rocks where the stream vanishes is (was?) covered with a yellow lichen hence the mustard bit.

Thanks so much for the information! I guess I'll just have to go back and explore it more thoroughly (no great hardship, there).
