I crossed Siberia twice by train, and I found that birches are commen everywhere, may be everywhere in the world. However, the whitness of the trunk differs. I found the most white is Poland, and in the central Russia. Those I have seen otherwhere were greyer and had more grey-black patches. Olga
There is birch in North America too - a beautiful tree. The bark is used in this region for folk art - decorated containers. In North America it was used for constructing boats - canoes - and many other things. As a boy I used it to start campfires in wet weather. Here I found a pleasing view :)
