Die Pyramiden von Meroë dienten Königen, Königinnen und hohen Beamten des historischen Reiches von Kusch als Begräbnisstätten. Sie fallen durch ihren steilen Winkel auf und sind mit unter 30 m deutlich kleiner als die ägyptischen Pyramiden von Gizeh. Der italienische Abenteurer Giuseppe Ferlini besuchte die Pyramiden 1834 und zerstörte einige von ihnen auf der Suche nach Schätzen. Seit 2011 gehören die archäologischen Stätten von Meroë zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe.
