Water was being let out of the dam to prevent it from being overtopped. It has since been raised to prevent similar situations. It was a spectacular show!

Thanks Beth, the whole of southern Arizona flooded that fall. I have another image - the split panel of Redfield Canyon - showing the effect in a small canyon near here. Tucson was cut off for a few days except to the east as the interstate bridges fell into respective rivers... it is a desert here you know... ;)
