Looking like a Tudor-style Victorian drill hall (or even a recreation) this is building is actually 100% the real deal – genuinely Tudor and beautifully preserved. It was built circa 1484 by William of Waynflete to complement his most famous foundation, Magdalen College at the University of Oxford. It is built almost entirely of brick and timber with hardly any stone used at all. Attached to the south wall are a clutter of Victorian outbuildings. The building now houses a museum, a library and café. The other side is more impressive still – with two impressive sets of decorative Tudor chimneys – but the light was wrong and the foliage too unhelpful for me to be able to take a picture when I visited. With a little prior research Wainfleet All Saints generally has much to offer the student of architecture (and excellent pubs and fish and chips too!).
