The 17-Arch Bridge, the biggest bridge in the Summer Palace, is 150 metres long, 8 metres wide, connecting the Octagonal Tower in the East and the South Lake Isle in the south.

The Emperor Qianlong aménagea the old Summer Palace, to be the residence of his mother in 1750 (15 th year of his reign) in the northwest of Beijing , where were already other imperial palaces since the XII th century. In the Summer Palace, one finds a variety of palaces, gardens, and other classical-style architectural structures.The central Kunming Lake covering 2.2 square kilometers was entirely man made and the excavated soil was used to build Longevity Hill.
