Gorkovskaya Metro Station: 100m downstairs with escalator
Well there was a Great Northern War with Sweden so firstly St.Petersburg was the military fortress for protection from the Swedish fleet. The war continued more than 20 years so emperor had to live there for coordination fleet and army. Secondly this place was very important because before the war Russian border lines didn't get to the Baltic sea. So St. Petersburg became the "window to Europe"! For the time of the war there appeared first houses, palaces, consulates so the capital was moved to Saint-Petersburg although before the end of the war it formally was placed still in Sweden :) Of course it was really difficult to build the city on the swamps but it was not built on the empty wild desert. There were lots of small Russian and Finnish villages and Swedish city Nyenschantz...
Thanks for the detailed informations, Dimitry. I know the historic origin of St.Petersburg. A new information for me is the fact of the swedish Nyenschanz. Your city has a very interesting hisstory!

Gorkovskay metro station
Thanks a lot for your visit, Alex. Is "Gorkovskay" the name of that metro station? Then I will complete the title.
Greetings from Hamburg, Klaus
Sorry for my interposition but the correct name the station is "Gorkovskaya" (to the memory of the famous Russian writer Maxim Gorky)
With kind regards from the autumnal Saint-Petersburg, Dmitry
Thank you, Dmitry! I completed the title.
Greetings from Hamburg in Blue, **Klaus
