My grandfather was Nels Gausvik & we visited relatives at this location in 1974. I recall that there was a Post Office just off the road and the farm we visited was located just up the hill above where the Post office was located. Now it appears much more inhabited than 34 years ago. Can you provide any help in locating those relatives?

I don't think there are anyone from Gausvik that has the name Gausvik. If there have ever been they have to be a lot further back tha 1974. Are you sure it's the right Gausvik? There is another Gausvik in Hardanger in the south-west of Norway.

Nels Gausvik emigrated to the US most likely in the decade between 1890 and 1900. We lived in Tromsø from 1971-1974 but only once had the opportunity to visit Gausvik. The family we visited was Reidar & Jenny Hoyert(h)un who had a daughter of driving age in 1974. They referred to him as "Onkel" Nels. I don't know the family tree any further back & I have no idea as to if any of the Hoyerthun family still reside in Gausvik but it would be interesting to know. Do you have other photos of Gausvik (not on this site)? Does a Post Office still exist there?

Aha! Reidar & Jenny Høyertun are dead, but their daughter Bjørgun still lives in the house. The post office was closed down in the early 90s, but the post number is still the same, so if you have the old adress it should still work. Actually my grandparents used to live in the house right next door. I have lots of pictures of Gausvik, and I am actually on vacation i Gausvik right now, so it's kind of interesting to get these questions now :-)

If you have the opportunity, please pass along my email address to Bjørgun and perhaps I can get some further information: tom (dot) berkey (at) gmail (dot) com After my first note I looked in my mother's address book and it only showed Reidar & Jenny Hoyertun at 9430 Gausvik. My mother died in 2000 at age 94. I would be interested to see additional photos that you have from Gausvik, especially if you have one of the house where Bjørgun now lives! Takk skal du ha!
PS I wonder if Bjørgun once drove a VW Beetle?

9430 Gausvik is still the right address.
Acording to my parents, both Reidar and Anne-Lise, Bjørgunn's sister used to drive Beetles :-)
My mother says that Bjørgunn still owns the house, but actually works and lives somewhere else. So I'm not really sure how to contact her. I will leave your email address with my mother, so she can give it to Bjørgunn if she sees her.
I'll contact you about the pictures when I get back home. And I'll take a couple of shots of the house tomorrow just to be sure.

Thanks so much for your help & I must say I enjoyed your photographs on this site. I have one or two that you can find if you look up White Salmon, WA. One of the Hoyertun daughters was in the Post Office when I stopped to ask about the whereabouts of the farm. I remember getting a funny look from a young woman who drove up the hill to the farm in a VW Bettle!! It is a small world ...

tberkey, My grandfather Evald Gausvik and his family emigrated to the US from Norway. Their name was changed at Ellis Island. I believe their last name was originally Andreasen. Now I wonder which of the two areas they must have lived near. Thank you for pointing out that there are two towns in Norway named Gausvik.

Jackie Gausvik - Have you used the Norwegian archives to research the genealogy prior to arriving in the US?? This is a very useful site to obtain accurate information on your relatives. Recently, one of the individuals identified above has emailed and provided very useful insight into the family. My grandfather was born Nils Bertheussen in 1870 in northern Norway. There is no record that he came through Ellis Island - the last official Norwegian record is his travel to the UK in 1893 (under his birth name). The next info is from records in North Dakota where he married and bought land.
