Many years ago at the tender age of 14 I stayed here briefly while on a training exercise with the Army Cadets. We were taken out to the Imber Range west of Tilshead carrying rucksacks of immense weight, a Lee-Enfield rifle and several blank rounds. After several hours negotiating the range we set up camp. I fell asleep while on sentry duty for which failing I received a kicking from a sadistic 16 year old Lance Corporal. My other memory is of firing our unused blanks into the camp fire and throwing thunderflashes at each other. Happy days.

Interesting story and place. Is it still used by the Army?

Very much so Marina. The whole Salisbury Plain military training area is run from here. Best wishes, purdey

Nice landscape shot and good composition. Sorry for the kicking, though.

Thanks! I hadn't planned on taking this pic until I found my route passed that way. Don't worry about my brief pain and suffering. I have a vague recollection that I took my revenge later that year at a summer camp near Portsmouth ;-)
