Yes, many of the temperate rainforests looks like that, although that's a particularly thick section. The trees are very-much alive, the moss and lichens grow there are epiphytes... they don't draw any water or nutrients from the tree, but rather from the air, rain, and debris accumulating around it. Especially on big-leaf Maples (the big tree you see in that photo), the mosses grow ESPECIALLY thick.
