The three-tiered tombs of the Royal Family in Tonga follows the cultural tradition of the ancient Polynesian "Langi" or tombs found in other locations, for example at the archaeological site at Lapaha, in eastern Tongatapu. The grave is covered with black volcanic stones, kilikili, personally collected by his son from Tofua, one of Tonga's western volcanic islands.

King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV was born 4 July 1918 died on 10 September 2006, in Auckland, New Zealand. His heir, his first-born son, Tupou'toa Tupou V will be crowned on Friday 1st August 2008, in Centenary Methodist Church, Nuku'alofa, Tonga.
