It is very important in Tongan culture to have the chair for a member of the royal family placed on the appropriate display of mat and tapa. This is part of the system of honour and recognition of rank.
There is a display of tapas in our gallery, that complements this set of your royal family images, Ian. Some of your network of friends may be interested.
I agree the display of tapas is very good, and represents one of the high values of Tongan culture. I am yet to understand the origin or purpose of many of the motifs used by the women. Some such as the pine tree, the bird (lupe) and royal coat of arms I know, but there are many others, some in your gallery, that I do not understand.
