Yes there is a portage place at the steam plant dam. The trick is to take almost nothing with you, except a book bag, a boat, and a paddle. Then, you can park your car at nearly any bridge, and make your way down to the water. Since the vegetation doesnt grow under the bridge, it USUALLY pretty easy access. I dont know of any official landings in this area, although there may be one. Keep in mind that the water flows about 2-3 miles per hour, so 20 miles = about 7-8 hours (if you keep up a steady pace). I would leave everything upstream of Highway 74 to the kayakers, it COULD be difficult to take a conoe through because of shallow water/fallen trees.
