Hello friends and welcome.

I crept silently down the private alleyway to discover this little 'bolt hole'. I had no idea of its' exsistence. Paula is right, the views from this cottage over the harbour are stunning.

Lina, As a lover of the sea, you would feel at home here.

Beatriz, I have passed close by this cottage for more than 60 years and never knew of its exsistence. What a surprise !!

Hey Giorgio, good to see you here, You are never to old to learn, but you would know this anyway. (^j-)

Billy, many of these Ginnels were public thouroughfares and provided a shortcut for those of us that wanted to avoid the 'madding throngs'.

In the days of YORE, smuggled contraband was shuffled from house to house, from one Yard to another, to avoid the eyes of the 'Excise' men, who frequently carried out door to door raids.

These days, many of the yards are closed to the public, and as for smuggling ? Well, your guess is as good as mine.

As always Freddy, it is a great pleasure to find you here. I shall be on your site soon.

Mira If you wanted to be discrete and take a lover, this would be a good place to enjoy your affair !!!

Best wishes to you all, and thankyou.

Sometimes Marilyn I feel that I have invaded someones privacy. That is how I felt when I pried down this yard. I hope no-one saw me.

As always Marilyn, your visit is my pleasure.

Cheers.

Thanks Sean. There is a sheer drop of some 40ft at the end of this yard. No place for children !!!

What a beautiful and charming place, Jim! Whitby must be a wonderful place! Thanks for showing us this private view! (I think I wouldn't have dared it). Greetings, Anne

Hello Anne. The tourists who rent these cottages probably think that I am just a harmless, confused senior citizen. They are, ofcourse, quite right....(-j^).

So many of these Ginnels that provided a short cut to other streets nearby, have been put out of bounds to the general public. Gates and doors have been fitted to give the occupants more privacy. It's quite sad really, but who can blame them ?? I so much apreciate you dropping in Anne.

Well, I agree, it can be very disconcerting when some old dear walks into your back passage! I think I mentioned this Jim, when i told you we were looking for our cottage! Thankfully they didn't mind the invasion into their back passage, and very kindly showed us where the place was! Such lovely people in Whitby!

Thanks for the lovely OLD DEAR compliment Paula. What is it about old dears and back passages? somehow they seem so well matched.

But sincerely, that was a very kind reference to the townsfolk. Cheers --Jim
